One of the conditions Defy Medical effectively treats is hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which someone has low thyroid hormone levels. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland int he lower front of the neck. It releases a hormone called thyroxine or T4. In healthy people, thyroxine is converted into the biologically active thyroid hormone called triiodothyronine, or T3. T4 production is controlled by thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid production can cause sexual dysfunction as well as depression, fatigue, dry skin and hair, weight gain and increased sensitivity to the cold. Blood tests to measure TSH, T4 and T3 are readily available and widely used.

The thyroid consists of two hormones known as triiodothyronine (T3) and its prohormone Thyroxine (or T4). T4 is a prohormone which must convert to the active T3 hormone for the body to respond. T3 is the bioactive thyroid hormone that controls the important functions related to thyroid hormone balance. Some people do not adequately convert enough T4 into T3 and therefore still experience symptoms of hypothyroidism despite showing normal T4 levels. Achieving optimal T3 levels is an important outcome necessary for the effective treatment of hypothyroidism and related symptoms.

Liothyronine (T3) is a synthetic form of thyroid hormone (T3) used to treat hypothyroidism. It is also used as an augmentation strategy in treating Major Depressive Disorder when used in combination with antidepressants. Levothyroxine (T4) is a synthetic hormone that is chemically identical to thyroxine (t4), which is naturally secreted by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. It is used to treat thyroid hormone deficiency, and occasionally to prevent the recurrence of thyroid cancer.

Compounded thyroid T3/T4 capsules are commonly prescribed in the treatment of some cases of hypothyroidism and other related thyroid conditions. It may also improve symptoms of thyroid deficiency; such as slow speech, lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, and feeling cold frequently. This is a compounded medication.
