LabCorp Test #: 004259, CPT: 84443

What is this test?

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is the hormone that stimulates the release of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. This test is typically the first line in screening for hypothyroidism (abnormally low thyroid function) and hyperthyroidism (abnormally high thyroid function). If TSH levels are low, it typically indicates an overactive thyroid function. If TSH levels are high, it typically indicates low thyroid function.

Thyroid hormones regulate our body's metabolism and influence virtually every organ system in the body. They tell organs how quickly or slowly they should work. Thyroid hormones also regulate the body's consumption of oxygen and production of heat. Thyroid problems, such as an overactive or underactive thyroid, can severely affect metabolism, energy levels, mood, and more.

Who is this test for?

This test is for anyone who wants to assess potential thyroid disease. If you are experiencing symptoms like fatigue, difficulty gaining or losing weight, dry skin, brittle or thinning hair, difficulty maintaining body temperature (either hot or cold), sexual dysfunction and other symptoms of a thyroid disease, it is recommended to test your TSH levels – among other thyroid indicators. For a complete thyroid analysis, it is best to order the full Thyroid Panel.

If you have already been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, this test can help you and your provider monitor your progress in managing the disease.
