Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) + Luteinizing Hormone (LH) LabCorp
LabCorp Test #: 028480, CPT: 83001; 83002
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) levels should be tested and monitored in those with hypogonadism, anorchia, gonadal failure, complete testicular feminization syndrome, menopause, Klinefelter syndrome, alcoholism, and castration. FSH and LH are both hormones secreted by the pituitary gland and are useful in the indication of primary gonadal failure from secondary causes of gonadal failure, menstrual disturbances, and amenorrhea. It can be useful in defining menstrual cycle phases, evaluation of women with infertility, and testicular dysfunction in men. FSH is commonly tested with LH; both are low in pituitary or hypothalamic failure and are high following menopause. Secretion of LH and FSH is pulsatile; in response to the normal intermittent release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). In addition, FSH and LH in females varies over the course of a menstrual cycle, which peaks at time of ovulation. Thus, interpretation from a single result may be difficult.
