Folate (Folic Acid), serum LabCorp

This test is used to detect a folate deficiency, monitor folate therapy, evaluate megaloblastic and macrocytic anemia, evaluate patients with alcoholism, and evaluate those with prior jejunoileal bypass for morbid obesity or those with intestinal blind-loop syndrome. Testing Folic Acid along with B12 helps doctors diagnose central nervous system disorders, anemia, and malabsorption syndromes. B12 and folic acid also play important roles in energy levels, muscle strength, and memory. Since B12 and folate are derived solely from dietary intake (i.e. egg yolks, beef, poultry, and fish), many are deficient in these important vitamins. Fasting for 8-12 hours is required for this test.
