This test screens for antibodies and antigens related to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus to diagnose HIV.

What is this test?

The HIV Antibody Test screens for HIV-1 antibodies, HIV-2 antibodies, and HIV-1 antigens to diagnose Human Immunodeficiency Virus in patients. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, better known as HIV, is the precursor to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and is spread by contact with bodily fluids, which includes sexual intercourse.

Symptoms of HIV may include sore throat, fatigue, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. However, many people are not symptomatic until the disease progresses to the AIDS stage, at which point people experience severe autoimmune illness that typically leads to hospitalization and death within one to three years if left untreated.

While there is no cure for HIV, antiviral treatments can keep HIV from progressing into AIDS and can help manage and avoid the spread of the disease. There are many more effective treatment options available for HIV now than in the past, but it is extremely important to diagnose HIV and begin treatment as soon as possible. Life expectancy extends drastically when patients with HIV begin treatment quickly after contracting the disease.

Who is this test for?

This test is recommended for sexually active adults as part of a standard screening to maintain sexual health. It is particularly recommended if you have multiple partners and/or if you have been intimate with someone who has been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Testing for sexually transmitted diseases is recommended at least once per year, and more frequently if you are sexually active. You may also want to consider ordering the Complete STD Panel alongside the HIV Antibody Test for a complete picture of your sexual health. These tests also help protect your partner(s) and prevent the spread of potentially harmful diseases to others.
