Insulin, Fasting LabCorp
This test measures the amount of insulin in the blood to diagnose insulin resistance and diabetes.
LabCorp Test #: 004333, CPT: 83525

What is this test?
The Fasting Insulin Test shows the amount of insulin in your bloodstream. “Fasting” indicates that this test measures natural insulin levels without the influence of food and drink. This test is typically used to diagnose insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes.
Insulin is responsible for transporting glucose, the body’s main source of energy, to the cells. When we eat or drink a caloric drink other than water, the rise in glucose triggers the liver to produce insulin to carry the energy into the cells.
To stay healthy, the body needs to keep glucose and insulin in balance within the bloodstream. Too little insulin leads to hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), causing fatigue, frequent urination, increased thirst, and other symptoms. Too much insulin leads to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can cause sweating, trembling, lightheadedness, and in more severe cases, shock.
Diabetes, insulin resistance and prediabetes are the most common causes for abnormal insulin levels.
Who is this test for?
If you are experiencing symptoms of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, this test can help identify whether your symptoms are caused by diabetes. This test can also be used to monitor your progress with managing the disease if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes.
