ACTH Plasma Quest
This test measures Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels to diagnose and differentiate between various pituitary issues.

What is this test?
The ACTH Plasma Test measures Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in blood plasma to illuminate potential pituitary conditions, and to differentiate between these conditions. ACTH is produced by the pituitary gland, and its function is to regulate cortisol, the stress hormone produced by the adrenal gland.
Abnormal ACTH levels can point to a number of pituitary conditions. These include Cushing syndrome, Addison Disease, cancer and tumors on the pituitary and/or adrenal glands, and hypopituitarism. Because ACTH is produced during times of stress, elevated ACTH levels can also indicate whether you are experiencing chronic stress, which can have many negative health effects.
High ACTH levels often lead to elevated cortisol levels, resulting in symptoms that include weight gain, puffiness especially around the face, thin skin, muscle weakness, and more. Low ACTH levels (and low cortisol levels) lead to symptoms like muscle weakness, low blood pressure, nausea, weight loss, and difficulty maintaining body temperature.
Who is this test for?
If you are experiencing symptoms of high ATCH/cortisol, this test can help identify whether your symptoms may be caused by a pituitary or adrenal condition. This test can also help distinguish between different types of pituitary and adrenal conditions.
This test may be ordered with the Cortisol Test to provide a more complete picture of overall health.
