The vitamin C blood test provides an accurate measure of clinical status for a patient's Vitamin C serum levels. Vitamin C is a cofactor for protocollagen hydroxylase, which promotes the conversion of tropocollagen to collagen. Decreased levels of Vitamin C occur in those with scurvy, malabsorption, alcoholism, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, and renal failure. Smokers typically have lower levels compared to non-smokers.
