Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Type 1 and 2 Specific Antibodies, IgG LabCorp

SKU
470-l

This test diagnoses Herpes Types 1 and 2.

What is this test?

This test checks the blood for IgG antibodies related to Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 (also called HSV-1 and HSV-2). If you have contracted the Herpes virus, your body will begin creating antibodies, which are an immune reaction to fight against the disease. This test identifies whether these antibodies are present to diagnose Herpes, so you can begin a treatment plan.

The Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2 can be contracted on the mouth as well as the genital area.  Many infections remain asymptomatic; however, the disease can also cause blisters or ulcers on the infection site. HSV-1 and HSV-2 are most contagious when symptoms are present, but they can be contracted even when a carrier is asymptomatic. There is no cure for HSV-1 or HSV-2, but ongoing antiviral treatment can help manage symptoms and transmissibility.

Who is this test for?

This test can help support regular screening to maintain sexual health. If you are sexually active, have multiple sexual partners, and/or you have had intercourse with someone who has been diagnosed with HSV-1 or HSV-2, this test is recommended. Because many infections are asymptomatic, it is especially important to screen often for sexually transmitted diseases like the Herpes Complex Virus.
