This test shows your Lipoprotein (a) levels to determine potential risk for cardiovascular disease.

What is this test?

The Lipoprotein (a) Test measures a specific lipoprotein that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream. Having high levels of Lipoprotein (a) or Lp(a) is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. Unlike LDL cholesterol (considered the “bad” cholesterol), Lp(a) levels cannot be controlled through diet and lifestyle changes. Your genetics determine your Lp(a) levels, and these levels typically stay consistent throughout your life.

More Lp(a) in the blood can lead to more LDL cholesterol settling into the blood vessel walls, which leads to plaque and hardening of the arteries.

Who is this test for?

This test is for anyone interested in identifying their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It is typically recommended for people with a history of cardiovascular disease in their family. This test can also be ordered to give more medical insight if you have experienced a heart attack or stroke but do not have abnormal cholesterol levels.

The Lipoprotein (a) Test is typically ordered alongside the full Lipid Panel with Total Cholesterol to give a complete picture of metabolic and cardiovascular health.
