Prolactin Quest
This test detects the amount of Prolactin in the blood, which can identify abnormal prolactin levels.
What is this test?
This test analyzes the level of Prolactin in the blood. Because elevated levels of prolactin may disrupt orgasm, providers sometimes use a Prolactin test to help pinpoint the cause of sexual dysfunction in men and women. Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland which induces milk production in women and helps in the development of nerve cells.
Certain medications like antidepressants, estradiol, and opioid pain killers can affect prolactin levels. Medical conditions like hypothyroidism and tumors in the pituitary gland, kidneys, and lungs can also create abnormal prolactin levels.
Rarely, elevated levels of Prolactin (also called hyperprolactinemia) can cause men to develop breast tissue in a condition called gynecomastia. Treatment of gynecomastia can include Hormone Replacement Therapy to balance body chemistry as well as aromatase inhibitors like Anastrozole.
